AAIMH WA Event:

Understanding and responding to relational trauma in Child-Parent Psychotherapy

Selma Fraiberg taught us about the “Ghosts in the Nursery,” unmetabolised relational experiences that can haunt a parent’s interactions with their child. Decades of work in the area of domestic violence have shown how parents and children may serve as trauma reminders for one another, triggering each other, hindering healing, and interfering with safety within these critically important relationships. This presentation uses clinical vignettes and metaphors to illustrate the interconnections between parents' and children’s histories and reactions, highlighting ways that two-generation interventions, like Child-Parent Psychotherapy, can repair relational trauma for both generations.

Dr Chandra Ghosh Ippen will share some videos as well as some newer case material with photos that will be new for those who are experienced in CPP and will help bring the model and the experience of young children to light for those who are not experienced in the intervention.

THE PRESENTER

Chandra is the co-developer of Child-Parent Psychotherapy and has supported the implementation of this evidence-based intervention for early childhood trauma in 15 states as well as in Sweden, Norway, and Australia. As the child of immigrants from India and Japan and the past co-chair of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network Culture Consortium, she is committed to thinking about how culture and context affect systems and services. She will contribute valuable insights related to developing trauma-informed early childhood systems, implementing deep IECMH interventions, and considering the importance of considering cultural nuances, embracing diversity, and fostering inclusivity within the framework of PIMH systems of care. Her expertise will enhance the conversation by exploring the intersections between trauma, diversity, and infant mental health.
